In the Mount Markham School district area we also have the influence of a private Christian School that has had students participate in the Mustang guards as well as students from nearby Brookfield Central Schools. For this reason, we are listed and entered in the Independent classes of competition.
About the Mount Markham Central School In 1933, what is now Mt. Markham Middle School was once known as the West Winfield Central School. We were one of 3 area
districts that included Bridgewater and Leonardsville Central Schools.
The three districts began experiencing overcrowding. At the start of the 1968 school year, members of the West Winfield, Bridgewater and Leonardville school boards began meeting to explore opportunities and the possibility of reorganizing into one larger district.
On July 1, 1969 a decision was made to merge the 3 districts and build one high school. The new high school was to be "state of the art" at the time and would include a large auditorium, science
labs spacious, open library and adequate space to handle all the "modern programs."
This is the building that has served well for us for the last 25 years. Leonardsville Central School would remain as an elementary school for our district until 2001.
Students, parents and members of the community were given opportunity to suggest names for the newly created district. A few suggestions were: General Winfield Scott Central, Four County Central, Upper Valley Central and even Apollo Central. {The last name is reminiscent of the era!} some suggestions were
better than others but ultimately, the mountainous terrain seen from the valley would be the name: The Mount Markham Central School District was the winner.
Today, Mt Markham is the 2nd largest district in the Herkimer county area covering 200 square miles, parts of which are located in 4 other counties and eleven townships. Our district has grown by leaps and bounds. we currently enroll about 1500 students in grades K-12. The Middle school was recently renovated to include a beautiful new wing. The addition allowed for a cafeteria and new gym as well as several classrooms. We have facilities to be proud of new sports fields, as well as additions and renovations to existing buildings that include a fitness and weight training area and tennis courts.
The future looks great for Mount Markham, and we should all be excited as the Mount Markham Central School district looks forward to the new millennium.
