Narrative:
After a very strong finish in local circuit competition the year prior, the Mustangs were facing new issues that were holding back the further progress and growth of the organization. The officers of the 2003 guard found themselves in a strange scenario...not many Mustangs to be officers of. We graduated 5 out of 12 members the prior year then had only 7 to build from, so....after a fall training program where we had  16 members we found that 5 of those 16 members were problems unto themselves as their academics were suspect and school attendance was even an issue, thus before Christmas the size of the guard was forced down to 11 performers...the 11th eventually decided to quit as well before January. This of course was the real problem  We then focused on the Ponies construction and further enhanced the Colts to fruition. To describe the season as wonderful or loaded with happiness would be lying. This season was hard work. A test of metal in dedication and the focus of the guard. The Mustangs attended their first regional ever and did very well. The guard found themselves competitively in yet another undefeated regular season. Ms. Andrea Scalzo Wilson joins the staff full time in November. The guard also had assistance from Janine Burmaster (a former student of Mr. A's from the Clinton guard a decade ago) in the fall training program. The guard was good at what they needed to be good at, but not so good at being a tight social and pseudo family...by the end, it all came together and the biggest reason was that everyone learned the simplest lesson in life..."We only pass this way one time, so let's get out of it all that we can...together". The future of the organization is left to 4 returning Mustangs, adding into that a few Ponies who are already trained and the preliminary sign ups at the high school level show that we could be looking at our largest guard yet in 2004. Out of crisis, may arise opportunity. The Memorial Day parade had to be a highlight of the entire program as all 3 units were represented on the streets with nearly 60 students involved in a Mustang Colourguard. 2003 was a unique year overall....The Mustangs  finished yet another undefeated season and get awarded  with the gold medal at MYCGC championships. Heather Guyer won the MYCGC Scholarship making Mount Markham the only guard in MYCGC to ever have back to back scholarship winners and at graduation, our first scholarship is given by the guard alumni and Courtney Gigliotti is the first recipient..
